I really don't know if butterfly reproduction goes in cycles but last year we hardly saw any Clouded Yellows whereas we were inundated with Peacocks. This year the reverse is true. It's a pity they don't show us the upper surface of the wing (only in flight) as when they're perched the wings...
I thought I'd try my luck & return to the spot where I saw Clouded Yellows a few days ago. Happily I was rewarded with several sightings, including this good looking specimen.
Really pleased to see this - I've only seen two Clouded Yellows in the UK before and that was on the south coast in 2006. These butterflies are immigrants to the UK, originating from north Africa and southern Europe, so that'll excuse this one for not being in pristine condition!
Although this was taken a couple of weeks ago, there were still a small number of these butterflies about at the week-end enjoying some late September sunshine (as were we!). Also still very much in evidence were large & small Whites, Small Heath, Speckled Wood, Wall Brown, Peacock, Common Blue...
