  1. Common Wood Pigeon (juvenile)

    Common Wood Pigeon (juvenile)

Another heavy crop, the bird being rather distant. It may look as if the bird is about to fly in front of the brickwork (the side of a block of flats) but in fact it's just about to disappear from view at some distance behind it. Possibly "size illusion" has something to do with this. Thank you...
  2. (Common) Wood Pigeon

    (Common) Wood Pigeon

Another shot of a Woodpigeon drinking at the pool on our little substation roof. Previously it’s also attracted Blackbirds and Pied and Grey Wagtails. With luck, a Grey Wagtail could turn up any day now, though in some years we get none. Thank you for your comments on my pictures, stay safe and...

My computer doesn't seem to have packed up after all. I restored the system to a date before the last Windows Update, and bingo all seems well, touch wood. Thanks very much, Delia, for mentioning you'd had problems from that Update. With that out of the way, here's a Woodpigeon demonstrating...

  11. Winter again

    Winter again

Such is April here. One day we think Summer is just around the corner. Then we turn that corner only to find it was Winter waiting there instead. We had a couple more such bursts of Winter in April, but hopefully we've seen the last of it now.

    Relaxing

... and all fluffed up against the cold. For it was very cold in mid-February. The snow which had fallen a few days before was now solid and sticking hard to the shed roof behind this tree. TTTW

Showing its "third eyelid" (nictitating membrane). Apparently dogs, and many species of wild animals, have these. Until recently I only knew of the membrane as an anatomical feature of birds. Thank you for your comments on my pictures, stay safe and well, and good birding! John
  15. Not unhappy

    Not unhappy

Jonno commented on the head shot of this bird that s/he seemed unhappy about the weather. I think Jonno must have been projecting what he himself thought he might have felt. The bird seems quite happy to me. Perhaps not about the weather, but about the seeds that had been scattered at the base...
  16. High stool

    High stool

I'd not seen a pigeon since the previous fall of snow back in January a few weeks before. He's found that new perch too. The sharp eyes amongst you may see the top of a seed feeder just below him... yep, I suddenly realised that I could hang one up there... and a bonus is that I can see the...
  17. A taste of Winter

    A taste of Winter

Common Wood Pigeon foraging beneath a tree in the park - frozen fallen berries, perhaps, and seeds someone had tossed out there.
  18. Woodie on ice

    Woodie on ice

I'd not seen a Wood Pigeon in the garden for a while, but knew they weren't far off as I'd seen some flying over during the previous week. TTTW

    Keeping an eye open

Personally, I find this sort of thing mildly unsettling, like being looked at by an octopus... Thank you for your comments on my pictures, stay safe and well, and good birding! John

    I'm not a duck

The morning started wet.... and got wetter. This pigeon wished he was a duck I think as he looks most disgruntled. TTTW
