Common Darter

I think this is a Common Darter but I am not entirely sure. Seen on the bank of a tiny river that flows past the building where I live.

I've seen very few dragonflies in my neck of the woods this summer. A few Brown Hawkers (in flight), one Black Tailed Skimmer, a couple of immature Ruddy Darters and this female Common Darter. I'm not sure if it's been a poor year for any reason or whether they're just avoiding me!

Posing nicely on the fence rail, so tried a hand held shot with my 55-300, not much leeway with the focus, as the wings are a tad out.

I spotted this guy struggling for its dear life in the water. However, that only became obvious to me when I looked through my lens to take a photo. I rushed taking it and then lifted this Common Darter out of the water with the help of a twig. I placed him next to the water to allow him to dry...

These guys were enjoying the late afternoon sun yesterday and I was glad I could get two of them in the one frame.

This female was in a broadleaved woodland away from water but it kept close company with a Southern Hawker in the same location (see soon).

The brambles are providing an almost too colourful background here.
