A migratory bird that goes South for the winter. First one I've seen this spring.

Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus megapotamus) followed by two Common Grackles (Quiscalus quiscula versicolor).

I hardly ever see them with any blue feathers

Looking full of himself after chasing off a couple Blue Jays.

Was surprised to see three of these birds drop by during a rainy dull day yesterday. Haven't had any in the yard for a long time.

At least I think it is. I mostly see the brown eyed Boat-tailed Grackles on the west coast but this bird is on the east coast. Just not sure.

Seen here just at the instant of starting to open its wings to fly off.

Can't think of much to say about this other than "There's a grackle.' So let me take the opportunity to say thanks to all the folks who say nice things about my efforts here. It's much appreciated and makes this site a fun and enjoyable place to share bird photos.

WHOA! Got to be careful on these springy branches when it's really windy!

Got 4 or 5 that come into the yard and absolutely dominate. Jays, Starlings, Doves, they all give way. Have easily twice as many Blue Jays but they don't mess with these guys. These grackles are not intimidated by any of the other yard birds, with the exception of a crow pair that drop in from...

Not perched on a branch, but even on the ground, a very handsome chap.

Common Grackle. Some people despise this bird. "Just another damn black bird!" But I like them. I find them subtly beautiful.

First Grackle of the Spring. Usually I gauge the coming of Spring by the appearance of American Robins, but this winter the Robins stayed around, so guess it's Grackle Season this time.

This Grackle seems to have missed his flight south for the winter. It is a common bird here in central Alberta in summer but should not be here in winter. Has been hanging around my house all winter. Photo taken through a window.
