Common Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor) Parking lot at Victoria Community Center, Victoria, Victoria County, Texas, USA. Urban setting in the Gulf Prairies and Marshes Vegetational Area at ca. 29 m (95 ft) elevation.
Yesterday at the Albany, NY Pinebush Discovery Center there was a bug cloud that attracted hundreds of these NHs to the swarm.
It is tough to get a good shot because they come out so late in the day, but this was one of my better males.
112 flew over west Albany NY tonight. The males have this white stripe on their tails which is lacking in the females. This shot was taken around 6:30 p.m.
Had followed up the nighthawk for 2 weeks.
There are 2 chicks which are quite big now. Should be able to fly in a few days' time.
Difficult to choose a pic as the earlier ones are nesting. In the later ones, most of the time the chicks are under of by the side of the Mom. Don't know if chick...
This guy has nerves of steel, snoozing on his favorite rock pile next to the highway, while 18-wheeler trucks roar by 25 feet away. I shot from completely across the road and up a small embankment.
There were 10 of these roosting here, mostly on telephone wires! I digiscoped this shot from 20 feet away. My current "setup" works very well at close range, but is not much good at all for longer distances.
Took my big dog for a walk tonight. Found this guy sleepin' on the RR tracks....thought that was rather unique. I would have gotten even closer, but I was afraid my dog would disturb him.
