  1. Common Starling

    Common Starling

Guarding the entrance to it's new nest cavity. I can see this tree clearly from my front door step, and I've watched this bird cleaning out the cavity over the last few days. I hope it picked correctly. Although this is a favorite tree for starlings to nest in, it's a dead tree and very rotten...
  2. Buried treasure

    Buried treasure

The snow was soft so the nuts had fallen through. Didn't stop this Starling though... still managed to find his peanut. The day was very overcast and we had lots of snow falling on and off, so the quality of this picture has suffered, even though I tried my best with adjusting levels and stuff...
  3. First snow of the year

    First snow of the year

The end of the first week in January brought our first snow fall and a decent amount too, as you can see. Starlings had been rather in short supply for the previous few weeks, but they didn't forget where to get some grub when times got hard, did they!! So, guess you're in for a few snowy...

  8. Starling Sun gazing

    Starling Sun gazing

... well there's no stars during the day... and it was a surprise to see some blue sky in the middle of a pretty wet autumn! The light didn't do me any favours; I've played about with the levels, but still not great detail in there, sorry. TTTW
  9. STARLING

    STARLING

The small bead of peanut butter at the point of its bill lets you know why he came to the yard.

  11. Feasting

    Feasting

This whitebeam was full of feasting Starlings that day, and perfectly lit by the sun. I got dozens of shots I'm really happy with, but rather than bore you with endless variations on the theme I've chosen this one, which I think was possibly the best of a good bunch.

  13. Before social distancing

    Before social distancing

Back when strangers could meet at the communal baths without worrying about households and "bubbles". Well, at least back when birds still could meet, before we learned there was a new bird flu spreading around Europe.
  14. Imitator

    Imitator

Starlings can imitate other birds' songs ... and behaviors. Not sure whether this one is imitating a woodpecker or a treecreeper.
  15. Winter spots

    Winter spots

This Starling seems to be ready for winter with his spotty coat on, and some people seem to be quite keen for some snow. But I'm quite happy with autumn colours still. TTTW

    SF3 - showerer & showeree

From a long series of puddle pics of Starlings and House Sparrows. I think I've shared even funnier ones from this series before.

    Plotters

I'm sure these two were planning some mischief between them. Wonder what though? LOL
  18. Crashed out

    Crashed out

I'd got loads of young Starlings around at that time, think this was now the second batch of them to come out of the nest.

  21. Common Starling

    Common Starling

Although they are an invasive species and I have stated my dislike for them many times, I will grudgingly admit, they can be pretty if you take a close look.
  22. Playing Woodpecker

    Playing Woodpecker

We're having lovely weather here this week - "Indian Summer". So after my Tuesday gym session I hiked over to the Moholt cemetery to see what birds were about. I decided to share a few shots from that session before going back to my chronology. So what did I see at the cemetery? I...
  23. Common Starling

    Common Starling

Looks like he's pleased with how many berries are there for the taking. He gobbled a lot of them! I think they are elderberries.
  24. A bird of many colours

    A bird of many colours

This Starling is recognised more as the Common Starling and is a widespread Species across most of Europe. In Europe the other main species of Starling is the Spotless Starling; Unlike the high diversity of species across Asian countries. Starlings inhabit a wide range of habitats from the...
  25. Yellow Bellied Sapsucker, Common Starling

    Yellow Bellied Sapsucker, Common Starling

I spread peanut butter on the trunks of this small maple. The bark is smooth and birds like starlings and Blue Jays can't cling to it and cobble at their leisure. However woodpeckers can. The Starlings and Jays have to hover for a bite, so you often end up seeing a scene like this.
