  2. Before social distancing

    Before social distancing

Back when strangers could meet at the communal baths without worrying about households and "bubbles". Well, at least back when birds still could meet, before we learned there was a new bird flu spreading around Europe.
  3. Imitator

    Imitator

Starlings can imitate other birds' songs ... and behaviors. Not sure whether this one is imitating a woodpecker or a treecreeper.
  4. Winter spots

    Winter spots

This Starling seems to be ready for winter with his spotty coat on, and some people seem to be quite keen for some snow. But I'm quite happy with autumn colours still. TTTW

    SF3 - showerer & showeree

From a long series of puddle pics of Starlings and House Sparrows. I think I've shared even funnier ones from this series before.

    Plotters

I'm sure these two were planning some mischief between them. Wonder what though? LOL

    Crashed out

I'd got loads of young Starlings around at that time, think this was now the second batch of them to come out of the nest.

he wasn't yelling at me, but inciting the fledglings to quit the nest

    Common Starling

Although they are an invasive species and I have stated my dislike for them many times, I will grudgingly admit, they can be pretty if you take a close look.
  11. Playing Woodpecker

    Playing Woodpecker

We're having lovely weather here this week - "Indian Summer". So after my Tuesday gym session I hiked over to the Moholt cemetery to see what birds were about. I decided to share a few shots from that session before going back to my chronology. So what did I see at the cemetery? I...

Looks like he's pleased with how many berries are there for the taking. He gobbled a lot of them! I think they are elderberries.
  13. A bird of many colours

    A bird of many colours

This Starling is recognised more as the Common Starling and is a widespread Species across most of Europe. In Europe the other main species of Starling is the Spotless Starling; Unlike the high diversity of species across Asian countries. Starlings inhabit a wide range of habitats from the...

    Yellow Bellied Sapsucker, Common Starling

I spread peanut butter on the trunks of this small maple. The bark is smooth and birds like starlings and Blue Jays can't cling to it and cobble at their leisure. However woodpeckers can. The Starlings and Jays have to hover for a bite, so you often end up seeing a scene like this.
  15. Common Starling Fledgling

    Common Starling Fledgling

I often see photos of Starling parents with 4 or 5 fledglings following them around. That is a rare sight here. Most of the time it's only one or two youngsters with the parents. I suspect young starlings are victims of heavy predation around here. This one seemed to be doing OK though.

At this point they are a stomach with wings.
  17. Common Starling

    Common Starling

Some starlings will try to hang on the upside down feeders. Others, like this guy, will expend a lot of energy trying to hover beneath and grab a bite.
  18. Common Starling

    Common Starling

This starling has gone fluffed up and spikey at me because it's annoyed with me. I put peanut butter out then stood guard over it so the smaller birds could get some. I wouldn't let the starling near it. It hopped from branch to branch fluffing its feathers and vocalizing all sorts of noises at...
  19. FIGHT!

    FIGHT!

Now that it's nesting season, the starlings are becoming a real feeder pest. They don't eat seeds but they do gobble down all the peanut butter and they ravage suet feeders. I resorted to homemade "upside down" suet feeders and that at least slows them down. They will hang for a moment...

A hugely underrated and pretty garden bird, The Common starling (Sturnus vulgaris) on my bird feeder, Essex, U.K.
  21. Common Starling

    Common Starling

They come and raid the places I put peanut butter every now and then. Otherwise they aren't as annoying as they usually are lately.
  22. Common Starling

Taking a look around, trying to find where I placed the tasty peanut butter.

It was vocalizing, then looking around expectantly, then repeating. I think it was calling for its mate.

they're feeding their nestlings mainly with insects, but from time to time they offer them some a berry.
