  2. Cuban Grassquit

    Cuban Grassquit

Unquestionably the most attractive of its genus (this is a male), the Cuban Grassquit has declined drastically in the west and centre of the main island due to trapping for the cagebird trade. Ten years ago the species could still be found locally in the Zapata region, but this grassquit is now...

Common Black Hawk catching a crab

Early morning walk on the beach in Cayo Guillermo, Cuba, found this chap catching his breakfast. The crab had been crossing the boardwalk and was an easy target...took a while to kill though. This light brown colouration is a Cuban specific (gundlachii), the Black Hawk is actually black elsewhere.

  11. Cuban Green Woodpecker

    Cuban Green Woodpecker

This bird was not only tolerant but oblivious to the many sunbathers underneath its nest site at the edge of the beach in veredaro cuba. So my integrity is in tact as I need to have a more distant position to achieve the shot.
  12. Cuban Green Woodpecker

    Cuban Green Woodpecker

The bird was only just within the focus range of the lens it was so close.
