Great Spotted Woodpecker - this was taken in one of my favourite bits of woodland which, although not entirely natural, feels to me to be as much like the wildwood would once have been as far as England is concerned. I like to just sit with my back against a nice comfortable tree and see what...

    DSC_4584-3.jpg

Peregrine Falcon - this bird was hunting along the cliffs at my local (ish) seabird colony. It gave me a somewhat intimidating, long, hard look as it passed. Those talons are ridiculously oversized. (A faster shutter speed would have frozen all movement).

Sanderling, River Duddon estuary, Cumbria, UK

The winter of 2011/12 was very cold where I live with the sand and mudflats of my local river estuary freezing hard at every low tide. Many Sanderlings and other waders had to spend every available minute feeding. I was sitting at the high tide line watching this individual feeding just a short...

(Common) Starling, Walney Island, Cumbria, UK

I came across a large flock of Starlings feeding in some fields beside the road. A few birds were perched on the fence and stayed put when I drove up beside them and stopped. I don't think I have ever really looked at Starlings quite so close up before. This one is in winter plumage and looks...

Red Knots (Calidris canutus), Rampside, Cumbria, UK

I had been watching these Knots from my car for some time when they were spooked by someone walking past. Or maybe they knew that the tide was turning and were off to start feeding again.

Red Knots (Calidris canutus) roosting on saltmarsh, Rampside, Cumbria, UK

Birdwatching from my car again today. I had just pulled over to look at some Brent Geese when several hundred Knots landed just a few meters away.

    Crummock Water - Cumbria

This was the far bank of Crummock water - Cumbria. It was taken with the 50-500mm Sigma and cropped to the waters edge to leave a pano type view... The trees in the foreground, lit by the late afternoon sun help give some perspective to the landscape

    Bassenthwaite

Not normally an area of my photography I give much time to, landscapes; but these places I visited recently are too beautiful not to photograph :) http://www.tomcharles-photography.co.uk/Landscapes.htm
