Whooper swans coming in for a landing at Lake Kussharo

In the early morning on Lake Kussharo, the swans are waking up after spending the night in the warmth of the hot springs flowing into the Lake

This part of Lake Kussharo is completely frozen over except for a small patch where a hot spring flows into the lake. The Whooper Swans congregate here.

Parts of the lake are completely frozen over. Winds keep the rest of the lake open but the rough waters drive ice up on the shore making hard for the swans to feed in shallow water.

My 1st ever bit of birding as a nipper in the mid 60's was going out round the farmland watching these beautiful winter visitors. I'm glad I can still do it every year, and never get tired of seeing 'em. This group on arable just outside of town.
