    Swans in the early morning

In the early morning on Lake Kussharo, the swans are waking up after spending the night in the warmth of the hot springs flowing into the Lake

    Whooper Swans on Lake Kussharo

This part of Lake Kussharo is completely frozen over except for a small patch where a hot spring flows into the lake. The Whooper Swans congregate here.

    Whooper Swans on Lake Kussharo

Parts of the lake are completely frozen over. Winds keep the rest of the lake open but the rough waters drive ice up on the shore making hard for the swans to feed in shallow water.

The area where the Mallard was, that I showed you the other day, is fenced off from the swamp part of the reserve to stop the Highland cattle from getting bogged down. There was a Whooper Swan just behind the fence, rather a late stayer I think, as nearly all of them had left by that date...

More FOS targets ticked off! From Backwater we moved down to Lintrathen Loch and were pleased to see a small group of Whoopers had come in, including some youngsters.
  11. Wait for me!

    Wait for me!

As the light began to go, a group of Whoopers took off down to the other end of the reserve. They eventually got into an orderly line, but by then were too far an any sort of usable picture LOL. Their numbers are falling fast - the other day I only found 2, but there were probably some more...

    This one's for Jan

....as he tells me he's not seen any yet! I guess he must live in the wrong part of Norway LOL. What a shame that such gorgeous swans. Anyway I hope you all enjoy looking at this lovely group. They'll be away north before too long I suppose, unfortunately.
  13. All black and white...

    All black and white...

... with a touch of yellow. Anyone who knows me, will realise I was in heaven that day (black and white birds are my favourites)!! Taken on my last visit to Kinnordy.

    This'll be daddy then

Strange, this picture was taken just 1 minute after the juvenile, but the light seems quite different.

There were loads of Whooper Swans around that day and this youngster had drifted in near the hide. The light was quite good for a change and I'm quite pleased with the result. It won't be long before they're heading back north for the summer, will it.
  16. Spring is coming....

    Spring is coming....

..... at long, long last! We've had much better weather this week so off to Kinnordy to see what's about. As we walked into the hide I told my friend to shut up and keep quite while I got a picture, as some of the birds were quite close in. It's wonderful to see so many Whooper Swans...

    Whooper Swans - Pastorally Posing

My 1st ever bit of birding as a nipper in the mid 60's was going out round the farmland watching these beautiful winter visitors. I'm glad I can still do it every year, and never get tired of seeing 'em. This group on arable just outside of town.
