OK I wanted to try to show a photo of the Junco asleep with its head tucked into its wing feathers. This is a screen grab from a short piece of video. Unfortunately the bird is a bit blurry, I didn't notice it till a few seconds before it woke up and took off so I didn't get a chance to focus on...
We just had a nasty late winter snow storm. High winds and 15 to 20cm of snow. I was busy all day taking food out to the birds and clearing snow from the feeding areas. Maybe I did my job too well. At first I thought this bird was ill. But I saw three others deep in this shrub all looking the...
Taken back in Nov. 4. The Juncos come and go in my yard. At first glance they seem a plainly coloured bird, but I think they are beautiful. It's not often I get a shot of this bird where one can actually see details of its eye. They're called "Dark Eyed" for a reason.
Along with the snow came an influx of Juncos. The snow melted quickly but these guys stayed. They were tough to get a shot of, they mostly stayed deep in shrubbery because I have many pushy Blue Jays here that kept alarming the Juncos. Fortunately this one paused in a gab in the tangled bushes...
I wonder if we are going to have a tough winter? These guys are showing up early. It's still quite warm here and I usually don't start seeing these birds till the snow starts flying in late November or early December.
This little Dark Eyed Junco flew into our window and was knocked out. My kids (5 and 3) and I put it on our table and watched it for about ten minutes while it recovered and eventually flew off! Glad it was happy ending as I've had to dispose of a few bodies in the past that weren't so lucky!
Back earlier in Dec. we had a huge rainstorm. A very heavy, cold rain with high winds. The only birds out in it were the juncos. These birds seem to be impervious to fall and winter weather.
Lately we had an upturn in temperatures, and suddenly these winter loving birds started to dwindle from the dominant birds (number wise) in my yard to just a handful. Soon they will disappear almost completely for the summer. So snapping photos of them while I can.
Trying a proud pose of its own.
I want to thank all those who make nice comments on my photos. I'm sorry I don't comment back as much as I should. I am a slow typer and it takes me forever to go through a page of other people's photos to comment and a lot of the time I just don't have the time...
