    Without going back through all my Great Spotted Woodpecker pictures, I can't remember seeing them drawing the third eyelid (nictitating membrane) over the eye when eating. But he shows it quite well here, with it almost covering the eye. This is a juvenile of course.

    My female Great Spotted Woodpecker just loves the peanut butter that I smear on the tree. Actually she's not alone, the Red Squirrel and all the tits do to. Sometimes I think that they wouldn't mind if we didn't put seed, nuts and fatballs out for them, as long as there was peanut butter LOL
