A beautiful female downy woodpecker posing nicely for me. Its rare I come across a woodpecker with such slick well groomed feathers. Usually they are sticking up all over the place.

This fellow has been coming to visit me for about a week now. I would say I have the correct suet for them now, since everyone seems to be happy with the choice. Today with the snow storm, birds that usually don't show interest in the suet have been giving it a try.

Happy new year everyone! This fellow gave me the run around in dark woods but eventually managed to get one of him with a little bit of light to get a decent picture. He was very busy feeding himself on insects and not the least bit bothered at being followed. Thanks for looking and happy...

I've had a great time in the garden recently with my local Woodies. Every day brings a pair of Downys, Hairys, Red-bellied and three Northern Flickers! What a treat to have all these great birds in the garden.

We stopped at a wayside on an 800 mile freeway road trip and the attendent had put a bird feeder nearby. A pleasant break from the hum of the wheels.

Hi folks. Looks like I am on the mend from by bought of whatever I had but it is sure going slow. I find a little time to try to get a few shots even if it is just in the backyard. Hopefully I will feel well enough to spend some additional time at the computer and do a little catching up on my...

Last Friday was a good birding day for me, thanks to a bad night plus the expectation that an insurance adjuster would be calling at any minute wanting to see my car, I took the day off from work. No adjuster called, so I wound up having the whole day outdoors birding. Got two definite firsts...

Here is the mate to the male I posted ealier this AM. They are in the backyard everyday and usually come to the suet feeders several times a day.

    Downy Woodpecker (male)

Male Downy heading for the suet feeder. The woodpeckers in general love the suet. It must provide something needed in their diet that they don't get from the bugs in the tree bark.

Thjis male Downy came to the suet feeder and then flew to a nearby tree where it's mate was waiting and fed her a bit of the suet.

I like the look of intense concentration on his face. He landed on a tree maybe 10 feet in front of me and was perfectly happy to stay there until a female downy woodpecker chased him off.
