Looking a lot like the large Hairy, this bird has a shorter bill in proportion to the size of its head. Thanks for that tip KC. BTW - It's a male, see the little red on the back of the head.
Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens subsp. pubescens) Male, species sexually dimorphic. Photographed in my backyard in the top of our Red Maple. Open manicured area with Post Oaks and one red maple at ca. 101 m (330 ft) elevation. Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, USA.
I belive this is a female. Normally I see many more downy's than hairy's, but not this year. Probably just a coincidence. I'll upload more hairy's as I get to them.
