Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens pubescens) Female. Brazos Center, Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, USA. Post Oak Savanna vegetational area. Margin of riparian woodlands adjacent to Carter Creek at ca. 84 m (276 ft) elevation. August 2020
We have an abundance of Downys in the yard, and this one in particular likes to visit the dead limbs on my orange tree. Late fall, he will even peck at my oranges.
Feeding at the Mockingbirds' tree late this afternoon. I don't know where the Mockers were, perhaps taking a break, or one of them would have arrived at the tree and scared him off!
He waited politely while the Carolina Wren ate at the feeder, and then they switched places! Such a different scenario from most that I have witnessed this past winter.
After seeing so many birds fighting at the feeders this winter, it was heartening to observe this Downy Woodpecker and Carolina Wren actually taking turns this morning! We had 5 inches of snow yesterday, but today was clear and sunny, melting some of the snow, despite the temperature remaining...
From Saturday afternoon, the 17th. This is the Woodpecker that the Carolina Wren chased away from the feeder. But the Wren spent only a minute or two eating and then left, allowing the Woodpecker to return. In case anyone is interested, the birds love this "Peanut Treat" suet cake...
This is the tree that the Mockingbirds were guarding intensively for months until they left the premises in early January prior to the snowstorm. Second of three Woodpecker species I saw today -- all on the same tree!
Grey, overcast sky all day long, photo taken at 5:40 p.m. This female Northern Cardinal is so much more obliging than is her mate (not shown), as evidenced by her willingness to share the feeder with other birds, in this case a male Downy Woodpecker. When the male Cardinal is at the feeder, he...
Here is the female Cardinal who showed up a few weeks ago. She is a little unhappy here because a female Downy has shown up at the feeder. But all turned out well because a few seconds later they were both eating peacefully from the same feeder!
Well, at least someone other than the Cardinals likes the black oil sunflower seed suet cake! Wierd how the sun is illuminating his identifying red patch. Most of our snow has melted now, but more due tomorrow night.
The chickadees are much more skittish than the woodpeckers, so I was fortunate to get this photo of the two of them together. Taken at 9 a.m., sunlight coming from the right of the photo, so Downy was in the shade.
