This eagle swooped down from it's perch to scoop a LARGE salmon from the river, drag it along the surface for about 50 meters before getting airborne and taking it away for dinner. I got this sequence but unfortunately the Pitt River is too wide and the distance to far for decent photos to post. Rats
We only managed distant views of this beautiful rare eagle whilst on a recent guided day trip of Alentejo.
However I managed a decent record shot as it caught the late afternoon sun.

This magnificent eagle was mobbing a golden eagle at Alentejo. Not great views but distinct enough for us to identify it in the evening sunshine.
Another first, thanks to our guide for the day, Simon Wates.

Not a great shot as the bird was quite some distance away.
However it was back lit by tremendous Alentejo late afternoon sunshine. Thanks to Simon Wates for a great a day out on the steppes of Portugal.

A bright sunny day and a good day for a ride along the dikes. Not many birds out and about except for this eagle and a GBH. The sun went behind a cloud just as it lifted off so colours are a bit dull but a fair shot anyway.
A difficult day for photos.Grey and overcast(SIGH- waiting for sun). Hard to adjust camera and get decent details. However I managed a shot of this eagle heading home with dinner. The unlucky entree might be a coot- just guessing from the look of the feet.
An immature Golden Eagle attacking a big goose. I had the eagle identified by a raptor society in PA. He attempted to get this goose 3 times but ultimately failed. It was spectacular to watch, as the goose dove underwater at the last second each time. Image not as clear as I wanted, but it was...
