Some of these birds had recently fledged from a nearby breeding colony.

I found a mixed flock of these birds in a rice field near Ganseong in Korea.

The rice paddy was freshly flooded after lying fallow and dry for most of the winter. Small fish, like loaches, like the shallow muddy rice fields and these attack predators like egrets and herons.

I saw this egret catch and eat three loaches in the rice pady not far from my apartment. It had some difficulty because the fish are particularly flexible and tend to wrap around the egrets bill.
