Through window glass. Not for the squeamish! While putting up feeders here was for the direct benefit to small birds, and the resulting photo opportunities, I also nursed a hope that a Sparrowhawk might eventually take an interest. After 18 months it happened. I wasn't at the window at the time...

    Back again for hunting songbirds.
  3. Missed

    Missed

While we were watching the pretty Wheatears on the dry stone dyke behind the car, suddenly a Eurasian Sparrowhawk swooped over the bonnet and headed for the dyke. Remember I mentioned a big black hole a couple of weeks ago, well he landed right there, and spread his wings for a moment cowling...

Then all the passerines suddenly disappeared ...

so I looked around a spied this lurker in a tree nearby. Am I right in thinking it's a Sparrowhawk?

The recent sparrowhawk from a different angle of view. Today was dull and grey, almost like in November. Thank god its March and we will soon have green trees with warmer weather. The broken stem is a result of heavy snowfall.

Our budgies kicked off a racket behind the curtains, next to the patio doors. When I parted the curtains this lovely lady was eyeing them up and trying to figure why she couldn't get at them. This is the second time one of these has attempted to get an easy snack. The Budgies do have a hide!

    Big meal.....Sparrowhawk

Had just caught a Wood pigeon along my bicycle trail

Taken when still at my last home. Opportunities for flight shots are much fewer now, though chances of a perched Sparrowhawk (at close range) must be better. Thank you for your comments, stay safe and well, and good birding! John

Checking out a bush inside which a number of sparrows and starlings took refuge.

Another shot of the bird photographed on 30 March, this time looking a bit cuckoo-like. Very heavy crop.

Thursday was a good day for raptors. Thank you for your comments, stay safe and well, and good birding! John

A short video of a female sparrowhawk feeding on a pigeon in my garden.

    Eurasian Sparrowhawk

Heavy crop. I wasn't set up for birds in flight, grabbed a few shots while it was still there. Thank you for your comments, stay safe and well, and good birding! John

    Eurasian sparrowhawk

The sprawk made a break on my songbird perch.
  20. Eurasian Sparrowhawk

    Eurasian Sparrowhawk

Extremely heavy crop, fairly extreme sharpening. The shutter speed, aperture and ISO make no sense for a flight shot, but I'd been photographing perched Redwings and there was no time to change things when this Sparrowhawk suddenly appeared in the distance. Thank you for your comments, stay...

to swallow. After a few camera clicks changed the sprawk its place and enjoyed bit-sized chunks of the gt on this tree stump. It did not care about me. Due to the light couldn´t I realize a faster shutter than 1/250 @ ISO 1600. Many of my pics are "action blurred".

with captured prey at my feeding place. They often hunt at bird feeding spots. Well, I would say their feeding places as well. 🥸 It took only a few seconds until the great tit was dead. Sad for the tit but birds of prey are birds of prey and they will for sure not become veggie lovers.
  24. Eurasian Sparrowhawk

    Eurasian Sparrowhawk

One of the resident Carrion Crows taking exception to its airspace being invaded by a Sparrowhawk. The agile hawk easily outmanoevred the crow, but neither was going to give up, and they posed for a series of shots chasing each other around the sky, albeit against the light in overcast...
