  16. Eurasian lapwing

    Eurasian lapwing

A lovely bird, as pretty in flight, as well on the ground. The small crest on the head tells you that we're are dealing with a female. There are many species of lapwings around the world, and their behaviour on the ground is similar, and their aerobatic capabilities are awesome.

    Spoonbills at Saltholme

Called in at RSPB Saltholme on my way to my mother's a couple of weeks ago. Never been before and well impressed - good facilities, Whiskered terns, Great Reed warbler singing, 2 first summer Little gulls - and these 4 Spoonbills. Not to mention all the 'usual suspects'. I'll be back.

    Sparrowhawk (Fred)

I've not seen him for a couple of days, which isn't unusual, but I've noticed the juvenile female watching me from my trees the last few days; it might be her keeping him away Camera Maker: SONY Camera Model: SLT-A58 Lens: 75-300mm F4.5-5.6 Image Date: 2014-11-24 11:41:17 (no TZ) Focal Length...
  25. Why I said juve Sparrowhawk was female ;)

Why I said juve Sparrowhawk was female ;)

I needed to go to ISO 1600 just to get 1/20th second on this, so very poor light, and through the double glazing I've blurred the prey a bit, so no blood visible. A Starling is about 9 inches long from bill-tip to tail-tip, and weighs about 3 and 1/2 ounces. A female Sparrowhawk is about 16...
