forest waterhole

  1. All brown

    All brown

Even so I think this Brown Cuckoo-Dove is rather attractive, this time I managed to catch him as he too off.
  2. But I like them

    But I like them

Of course, it couldn't be long before the Catbird arrived to savour the clementines LOL Just managed to grab this picture before he flew off with it, as was his wont.
  3. No clementine for me either!

    No clementine for me either!

First saw the robin beside the clementine, but he flew off without tasting it! Fuss-pots some birds, aren't they!
  4. Maybe I'll.....

    Maybe I'll.....

.... dye my eyebrows red. What do you think?;) It's not always easy to get a singleton of these, as there's usually at least a pair and they often stick close together. This one though just got separated enough for me to be able to concentrate just on him. Quite striking finches, aren't they.
  5. Take off

    Take off

I think it's fun trying to get little birds in flight, though I didn't really know this was going to happen. An Eastern Spinebill was having a bath in the waterhole, so I started clicking when he suddenly flew up, with a load of water droplets streaming off him! I was quite pleased with the...
  6. At the bar

    At the bar

Well he was actually on the log pile to the right of the waterhole, but he did go for a drink.
  7. I don't like Clementines

    I don't like Clementines

Well he made that plain, didn't he.... walked straight past that segment! Or when I say 'walked'... perhaps I should have said 'strutted' LOL
  8. Cute....

    Cute....

... is how my book describes them. And they're right I think LOL I'd first seen this one on my last visit to the forest, so it was wonderful to be reacquainted with him on my last vist there.
  9. Lewie

    Lewie

Hans put the clementines out and almost immediately a Lewin's Honeyeater arrived to inspect it. These are very vocal honeyeaters.
  10. Rouffy

    Rouffy

And so started my last full day in the care of Hans and Judy. So for the final time Hans took me back to his forest waterhole and the first visitor in was the gorgeous Rufous Fantail, though he shouldn't really need any introduction by now LOL
  11. A first Lifer View!

    A first Lifer View!

Not very helpful was it! A Scarlet Myzomela, which is also known as a Scarlet Honeyeater.
  12. View from my hide

    View from my hide

This was the end of my penultimate visit to the forest waterhole with Hans and I thought it time to let you see the set up. I only cropped it a very little bit. I was sitting on a comfy seat, surrounded by netting with a hole cut out to poke my camera lens through, you can see a bit of the...
  13. A new honeyeater

    A new honeyeater

You should have seen the first picture I got of this guy... hadn't a clue what it could be just I'd know it was different (... can see a SF picture coming;)) When he emerged properly into my vision, it turned into this beauty, a Scarlet Myzomela. It's also known as Scarlet Honeyeater Sadly he...
  14. Sheltering

    Sheltering

Just as the action with the two monitors finished I spotted a Regent Bowerbird in the nearby trees.... whether he was keeping away from the battle or trying to keep in the shade out of the sun, I'm not too sure.
  15. A battle

    A battle

.. for supremacy I guess. I was so hoping a Lace Monitor would appear again and sure enough one arrived. Had a drink and swam around in the waterhole. Suddenly Hans and I noticed another, larger, one appearing stage left! Gawd now what!!! The first one was still in the water but climbing out...
  16. Silver and gold

    Silver and gold

Of all the gorgeous birds I saw in Australia, I think these must be way into the top 10 of my favourites. Such pretty wee things with the most remarkable eye make-up and so active and agile too! What a joy it was to see a pair of Silvereyes at the water hole.
  17. Is this for me?

    Is this for me?

Well that seems to be what she's saying. A female Regent Bowerbird came to look at the fruit on offer. Hans likes to put our mandarin segments, which quite a few species seem to appreciate.
  18. It doesn't get any easier

    It doesn't get any easier

... to get pictures of camouflaged birds! Even though I'd had some practise at it already! This Bar-shouldered Dove really does blend in so well with the forest floor, doesn't he.
  19. Not quite honey

    Not quite honey

.... but it is delicious! Unlike the Green Catbird who ran off with the segments, the Lewin's Honeyeater was quite happy to nibble at them on the log.
  20. No berries!!!

    No berries!!!

Desperately I was trying to attract Hans' attention, but he was deep in concentration on something else and I couldn't get through to him!!! For there are the waterhole was this stunning Mistletoebird. A first for me of course and, it turned out, a first sighting at the waterhole.... and he...
  21. Ruffie is back

    Ruffie is back

Although I took a couple of dawn images the next morning they're not really the best, so I'll skip them and move on to that day's visit to the forest waterhole. One of the first arrivals was one of my pals, the delightful Rufous Fantail
  22. How to produce...

    How to produce...

.... your own raindrops. Believe it or not there's a Satin Bowerbird in that mess! However, he only needed to wait a few hours and the rains came.
  23. Satin

    Satin

The Satin Bowerbird came back and wandered really close to my little hide.... just had to take this didn't I. He seemed desperate for me to take his picture and I really didn't mind as he's so beautiful.
  24. Destructive

    Destructive

Finally the male Regent Bowerbird turned up to escort his lady. Apparently the male doesn't maintain his bower for any length of time, only about 10 days I think. However, they will destroy it if another male finds it!
  25. And father makes 3

    And father makes 3

I really couldn't believe it when dad also appeared on the scene. He looks really severe with that head-on pose, doesn't he. Another speedy guy, this was the only picture I got of him.
