I have nine images of this bird, all showing a (for a snipe) very short bill. However, the only short-billed snipe (somewhat) expected here is Jack Snipe, which should have a lot more white on the underside of the wing.

Wilson’s Snipe (Gallinago delicata) My wife and I leave for South Texas in the morning for 10-12 days. I will not be on line during that time. Good birding and photography to everyone. Cheers! Stanley

These birds are great at flushing and flying away from you, but I always struggled to get a good flight shot of one. Luckily, this bird flew the right direction, and my camera actually decided to focus, and got a somewhat decent photo of this guy.

Another well-camouflaged bird, who likes to stand among the wetlands grasses in the mud or shallow water and blend in.

The usually hard to find Wilson's snipe has been popping up a lot lately - this marks the 4th time I've photographed one in 4 weekends, and this time at a different wetlands than the previous shots. I'm not complaining, though!

    Wilson's snipe

Another lucky spotting last weekend - this very elusive and very well hidden bird is one I may get to see once or twice a year, and some years not at all.

    Wilson's Snipe

Snipe tend to be more active at dusk and dawn. During the day, they are easy to overlook as they sit still blending into their background. Their very long bill is used to probe for worms and other invertebrates in the mud. The tip of the bill can be opened independently of the rest of the bill...
