It is just a bit of preening but I had the impression that the upper bird was trying to attract the bird below.

How close to the edge can a Gannet nest.

A mature gannet bringing back more nest material

Went to Bempton for the first time on Thursday. Couldn't stay too long as I was visiting family but got some nice flight shots of gannets.

This was my first real opportunity to take flight shots of gannets close-up. The cliffs to the northside of Brow Head on the West Coast of Ireland are an ideal spot. The gannets can be clearly seen diving about 200 metres from the cliffs, and when they return they fly very close to the cliffs. I...

Spent a happy hour or so trying to catch a gannet just as it dived into the water. Anyone want about 40 pictures of splashes? This was the only even half successful one. Poor quality because on the move with a long lens, but it shows the dart-like shape.

Part of a more dispersed feeding flock which had homed in on a surface fish shoal. Birds were diving in at all angles but always threw back their wings to form a dart-shape just before hitting the water.
