    The Great One

Such a stately and interesting fisherman to watch, unless of course it's in your koi pond, but we all must eat.
  3. Great Blue Heron, up and away

Great Blue Heron, up and away

Another in flight of the Great Blue I posted yesterday. I've never quite mastered the technique of in flight shots. When I finally get one I brag, hence two from a sequence of several nailed shots of this heron.

My wings are bigger thanyour wings.

Some conflict feeding rights. The goose ultimately won.
  5. Great blue takes off

    Great blue takes off

After a bit of pacing behind the reeds, this Great blue stalked out in the clear, but further off than the first one I'd seen (behind the chain-link fence), so the focus wasn't as striking as what I got on the first bird stop. All in all, I thought my theme for today's posts could be Great Blue...
  6. Great blue deep in green

    Great blue deep in green

I didn't call another bird stop when we passed more Great blues along Alameda Creek on the way up-stream, but on the way down again I watched for them. We saw two, one of them a juvenile. Here was the first glimpse we got of the adult, seen through a thick screen of green reeds.
  7. Bird stop!

    Bird stop!

Today was a biking and birding day. My sister and I rode our bikes on a 35-mile excursion - 17.6 miles uphill to a favorite caf, then home again in headwinds. Part of the point was to try out my new kit for hiking and biking with camera - a frontpack for the camera and a small hydration vest...

  9. Great Blue? Or Brown? Heron

    Great Blue? Or Brown? Heron

I guess this is a Great Blue Heron, because that's pretty much what we get around here. But it looked brown.

Great Blue Heron in Flight QUE SER

This bird was flying along the edge of a small lake in Frontenac Provincial Park, southern Quebec, Canada. I took the photo from a rowboat.

Great Blue Heron, Ardea herodias, with a flatfish. I think the fish is probably a starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus (although the fins are unusually rounded). For higher resolution: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35195017@N06/5621152088/in/photostream (right-click and choose Original)

    Like beak like stare... Piercing

It's the same GBH from the profile picture. Seemed pretty bold. It sensed me and it appeared through the lens to head straight at me when in reality was just spearheading for a catch (but that didn't happen).

    I can sense your lens

Hi all, uploading pictures after a long time. Thought this forum deserved fresh batch of pictures rather than those accumulated over time. So here they are. My trip to the banks of little econlockhatchee river yesterday got me a few.

Getting the Kid's Room Ready-Great Blue Heron on the wing

Caught in flight by my 10 year old son, ornithologist/herpetologist in training en route to the nest.
  20. Great blue stalking closer

    Great blue stalking closer

I had a great hike today. I'll have to check a map, but I think it was around 7 miles. 4 hours, 840 bird pics, learned some new settings on the camera that greatly improved my d.o.f., got sunburned, still had the energy to do my 3 1/2 mile team training in the evening. Towards the end of the...
  21. Great blue with catch

    Great blue with catch

Then the Great Blue stabbed downward behind a shrub and came up with ... well, I'm not sure whether this is a frog or a rodent, but it's definitely a mouthful. Which became a throatful in the next shot, but I can't show that one this time because three's the limit and, by popular demand, I'm...

    Great Blue Heron

Found 2 minutes from home, settled in a small pond just after sunrise, I've been in sick for almost 2 weeks, felt great to be out birding again!
