Sorry to post the same bird so close together, but thought others might enjoy this GIF. Even though conditions were not great, I was really excited to watch this take place, and even more excited to snap these pics! Enjoy!

    Blue Heron getting it done!

Forgive the poor quality, but no do-overs, you know. I was focused on some Greenwing Teals, but noticed the heron land across the pond. He was roughly 150 yards or more away, and I did not even have a chance to re-focus on him. Plus, there was tall grass and cattails on my side. They were in...

    Is this thing edible?

I watched as this heron first grabbed something out of the water, then repeatedly dropped it and picked it up again, turned around and repeated, as if it was unsure whether to eat it or not. Departed with whatever it is so don't know the final decision. A different, though not clear, photo...

Do shoulder epaulets indicate Heron rank?

This Heron appeared darker than most of the Heron's I've seen. The "shoulder" markings were somewhat different and more vivid too.

    The creek was still flowing

which is unusual for California's central valley at the end of summer. That makes Putah Creek a refreshing, relatively cool, shady spot, which lots of people enjoy visiting. And for those who actually do like the valley heat, some of the picnic areas are in more open, grassy areas up on the bank...
