Found many Great Egrets in the estuaries and natural canals near the marsh area at Magee Marsh Ohio. Many of these birds had the long wispy breeding feathers like this one.
A mixed flock of Great (most) and Snowy (fewer) Egrets, about 25 birds in all, was feeding on a floating mat of aquatic vegetation in a lake produced by the flooding of the Samiria River.
The nice thing about the Marsh Trail is that it was built out into a lush habitat. It runs for over 1.5 miles out, but no loop. It's a perfect place for taking aerials of different waders traveling from one spot to another. You do have to get use to the gators on either side of you, but...
About 14 miles south of Eagle Lakes Park on #41 you will find the Marsh Trail, which goes out into the 10 Thousand Island National Refuge. This is another must for any birder in the area.
Egrets and herons are some of my favorite birds, so it is wonderful that there are so many of them in my neck of the woods. This gray heron doesn't think this great egret is all that great and invites it to leave. Apparently, the egret didn't think it was worth arguing about.
