  1. Great Egret

    Great Egret

The sun was a bit high here but what amazes me is how small the pray can be for these large birds. In this case it's a lizzard, but such tiny fish can be speared also.

I've seen this egret quite often this year. One never knows if the species is doing better or it's just by chance.
  15. Great Egret on Watch

    Great Egret on Watch

Found a new spot along the old towpath for what was the Champlain Canal. It now kind of resembles a longish pond. Herons both Great Blue and Green hand out there and also Great Egrets. Also some small shorebirds in migration. Actually I was told about it by some birding friends and went there...

    Great Egret

As I have said we only get Great Egrets here flr a few weeks in August after the new birds are doing for themselves and depending on the numbers in the nesting areas some get dispersed to find more food sources. These birds move both north and south asnd therefore here in the north we get eith a...

    Welcome to Sonoma meadow

We watched one great egret on the meadow two days in a row. The third day (today) there were five! While crossing the meadow we met Thea from the bookstore. She said she had seen an egret catch a gopher out there. Good for you, egrets! Go get those gophers!
  24. Caught One!!

    Caught One!!

Same Egret as in previous post. He was catching these small fish, one after another. Guess a whole bunch of small ones is as good a meal as a couple of big ones. lol It looks like this is going to be a good year for the numbers of egrets pushing up here. I counted 23 on the river yesterday.
  25. Out Fishing

    Out Fishing

The Great Egrets are starting to push in to our area. They will stay around for about 2-3 weeks. We always get them here in upstate New York in early August. They nest south of here in NJ and other states but at the young grow and start to forge there is not enough feeding grounds to support...
