The sun was a bit high here but what amazes me is how small the pray can be for these large birds. In this case it's a lizzard, but such tiny fish can be speared also.
Found a new spot along the old towpath for what was the Champlain Canal. It now kind of resembles a longish pond. Herons both Great Blue and Green hand out there and also Great Egrets. Also some small shorebirds in migration.

We watched one great egret on the meadow two days in a row. The third day (today) there were five! While crossing the meadow we met Thea from the bookstore. She said she had seen an egret catch a gopher out there. Good for you, egrets! Go get those gophers!
Same Egret as in previous post. He was catching these small fish, one after another. Guess a whole bunch of small ones is as good a meal as a couple of big ones. lol
It looks like this is going to be a good year for the numbers of egrets pushing up here. I counted 23 on the river yesterday.
