This young Great Horned Owl is found at Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, SC. It is getting a little more adventurous and venturing out of the nest and onto the adjacent limb a little. Mom is somewhere nearby but we often can't find her. I doubt she is rarely out of eyeshot of the nest...
One of our larger owl species, and as with all owls, difficult to spot during the day. When nesting, the male will be more active during the day, both guarding the nest and retrieving food and nest supplies - that's when you can get lucky and find one in the open. Somewhat!
Another BF member directed me to a nest of owls right smack dab next to a heavily used public walk. I stopped by yesterday to check the surrounding woods for the parents. One of them treated me to a nice bit of observation. Beautiful birds. Saw both parents, but only one sat still for...
that I sat there across the street in my car taking its portrait for 10 minutes or so. For the past several years when I've been walking my dog late in the evening, I've heard 3-4 Great Horned Owls hooting away in my neighborhood. I've looked and looked but but have only been rewarded with an...

I don't really know whether there was something attracting the young owl's attention or whether this was his idea of roosting (in the previous images the eyes are rather more open).
And here's the youngster, thankfully rather lower in the tree so that there was a better angle for photos.
Since the young bird doesn't yet hunt during the night it's apparently also not that ready to sleep during the day, so in a few visits to the tree I was able to see some action - here an...
Another lovely garden bird at Araras - they had a pair of Great Horned Owls with a nearly fledged youngster, all roosting in the same tree. Let's have the parents first.
