North America — Unknown bird sound, Southern California

I live near some tall eucalyptus trees in Southern California where many birds perch and sometimes nest, including hawks of several species as well as great-horned owls. This morning, before light, (Sept. 1, 2022), I listened for a time to the hoot of an owl. Then a second and unknown sound was...

High ISO, low light photo of a GHO. I was so excited to finally see one with a camera in hand, so had to share despite it not being the greatest GHO photo.

    Great Horned Owl Owlet

This young Great Horned Owl is found at Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, SC. It is getting a little more adventurous and venturing out of the nest and onto the adjacent limb a little. Mom is somewhere nearby but we often can't find her. I doubt she is rarely out of eyeshot of the nest...

    Great horned owl

One of our larger owl species, and as with all owls, difficult to spot during the day. When nesting, the male will be more active during the day, both guarding the nest and retrieving food and nest supplies - that's when you can get lucky and find one in the open. Somewhat!

Another BF member directed me to a nest of owls right smack dab next to a heavily used public walk. I stopped by yesterday to check the surrounding woods for the parents. One of them treated me to a nice bit of observation. Beautiful birds. Saw both parents, but only one sat still for...

    Just didn't give a hoot...

that I sat there across the street in my car taking its portrait for 10 minutes or so. For the past several years when I've been walking my dog late in the evening, I've heard 3-4 Great Horned Owls hooting away in my neighborhood. I've looked and looked but but have only been rewarded with an...

Birded all day in local hotspots and had some nice sightings from afar, but photo opportunities were slim. Came home and found this in the backyard. My first wild owl shot!

    Great Horned Owl

This is what I believe is a Great Horned Owl. The picture was taken on Feb. 3, 2018 in Saguenay, Quebec. The owl had a mouse in its beak when it landed on the cedar; it then dropped it and sat for a minute, looking around.

    Peering down

I don't really know whether there was something attracting the young owl's attention or whether this was his idea of roosting (in the previous images the eyes are rather more open).
