    Great Spotted Woodpecker

Taken in 2017, from about 50 yards. As will be fairly obvious, the bird had been perched on the tree, this wasn't a planned flight shot! Thank you for your comments on my pictures, stay safe and well, and good birding! John
  13. Big Woodie

    Big Woodie

Unfortunately I never got a look at the back of the neck to check the sex of this one. Rather a snooty look I thought too. LOL
  14. Taken possession

    Taken possession

It appears this lady has decided this part of the feeding area is hers and is daring anyone else to try and take over.

    Woodie takes possession

The first woodpecker I'd seen for months. I didn't get a look at the nape in any of the pictures, but I think this is a female. EDIT: since uploading this pic my laptop has had to go into Laptop Hospital. Don't think I'll be able to do much browsing for a day or two.

She really seems to be making that statement, doesn't she!! Not my best picture of a GSW, but I liked that pose with her showing some attitude.

    Zygodactyl toes (SF)

The arrangement of toes in some species such as woodpeckers is known as Zygodactyl. You can read more about this, and the other toe arrangements in our Opus article on Topography; https://www.birdforum.net/opus/Topography#Toes .... or Ooops! If you prefer. She dropped her nut, which you can see...

    Nut lover

The last days of March had come and I saw my first Woodpecker of the year. This lady popped in to feast on the nuts.

    Consolation prize

That day I walked for miles, even climbing through hip-deep snowdrifts, criss-crossing the right area but without seeing the Hazel Grouse or the Ring Ouzels ... I did stop to rest at a feeder on my way back down the hill and got some quality close-up time with this GSW.
