    Still in the yellow

Early July and juvenile Great Tits are independently feeding while still showing their yellowish white plumage. I wanted to tell you the story of the log feeder he was using. I'd had it a few years to use in the garden, the birds loved it and I couldn't keep up with refilling it. All the tits...

Technically my first bird photo :) I dont have a good camera (yet! im getting a Canon SX70 soon) so i used an old camera i found somewhere lying around, which is a FUJIFILM finepix XP30. Not a great photo, but i just wanted to share it as i found it a bit funny that i took a bird photo with an...

    Birds in snow - 1

OMG! Has it really been 2 1/2 months since I last posted? I need to get a grip here! Luckily, I don't have a lot of share-worthy photos to catch up on. But here are a handful from Mar 25, back when we still had snow. Here's a Great Tit in what, for most of you, will be an unusual habitat...

    Table manners

At our new feeders I spotted a Great Tit on a branch eating a seed. This is the the tit species favourite method of eating. Get a seed and fly to a branch, holding it between his toes to peck at it. Thanks to Ann (Doc Duck) for pointing this out to me many years ago.

Two's company, three's a crowd. They had a serious dispute, fights included. My only "sharp" shot.

    Christmast treats 2

Another Xmas tradition here is to bake 7 varieties of cookies for Xmas. At least one of those varieties is usually deep fat fried. And of course you're not supposed to pour the leftover fat down the drain. So I fill some muffins forms with bird seed and pour the leftover fat into those to make...

    Tit calls, Warsaw, Poland, 26.12

While listening for birds at a clump of bushes occupied by Great Tits and Blue Tits, I heard these two unusual calls. BirdNET identified both of them--as a Long-tailed Tit and a Marsh Tit, respectively--and I've managed to find convincingly similar recordings in the internet, but Merlin wasn't...

I think our resident Great Tit pair hatched two chicks this year - or perhaps hatched even more, but brought two chicks through to independent feeder-visiting age. I'm still seeing four arriving and leaving more or less together. I probably won't know how long the chicks live, though, as I...
