Greater Spotted Woodpecker - Female
I moved last winter to a higher altitude and have noticed the birds here are almost two months behind my last place in Lincolnshire, which was flat and warm nearly all year round.
Another tender moment, just after mother has shovelled food done her little babies mouth.
The baby is feeding itself and drinking water, but seems it still likes a feed from mum.
The baby is the fatter one, the mother is the one looking at the camera.
When I sit outside with them, they do not...
This greater spotted woodpecker had noticed the goshawk perched up in a tree. She was obviously scared and hiding, perched low on another tree, with the tree trunk hiding her from the goshawk.
She did not move and she let me get very close. Eventually the goshawk flew away without striking.
There are a couple of GSWs setting up a nest nearby and both male & female are visiting our feeders in the garden regularly. Here's hoping for some fledglings soon....
Taken at Loch Garten which, in truth, was a bit of a disappointment. This being the only decent shot I managed to get during our visit.
Many thanks as always for your comments and have a good bank Holiday week-end!
Another shot of a Greater Spotted Woodpecker - my favourite bird at the moment! I've done a bit of editing here to blur the cluttered BG a bit - hope I haven't overdone it!
