This is the same Green Heron that I posted yesterday but with his neck in the more usual pulled in position. THis shot was taken just before he heard something and extended his neck.
I always find it amazing to watch these birds do that action as it makes them look like a different bird except...
There is a spot near me where it is part of the old Erie Canal and has a lot of dead trees, many fallen down. The green herons love to sit on the downed trees and hunt for frogs.
These guys present such different views when they have their neck stretched out vs when it is in it's normal pulled...
These two were quite annoyed with one another and wound up fighting. Eventually the Heron became bored with the Grackle, and flew away. The Grackle chased after him!

I wondered why they sometimes call this the Green-backed Heron until I took this photo. Evidently it can raise this green hump of feathers on its back as seen in the photo.
I was out walking near the creek where I work and caught some movement out of the corner of my eye and saw this heron. I went back and got my camera and it was still there.
I watched the three Immature Green Herons for a while and they seemed determined to do something adventurous. They were so close that this photo is only slightly cropped.
