Last Friday, as I sat in my "hide" between two cypresses snapping pics of scaup, I heard a great flapping of wings and a hoarse "khak khak khak" as someting cinnamon brownish flew by and landed one cypress to the left of me. Between the branches I could glimpse a pair of...
Finally I needed to move on. I stood up from my "hide" behind the cypress and, after demonstrating his lack of fear sufficiently for his pride, the green heron flew off. What an impressive pair of wings he has!

Watercolor on Arches 140# paper. 12x16 inches. One in a series of watercolors of an immature Green Heron we saw in August, 2009 at Tinicum(John Heinz NWR) in Philadelphia.

For some reason this bird just doesn't enjoy having it's picture taken. After playing the "I'm not watching you" card, I was able to get a series of photos that included full body fluffs, head shakes and finally........dinner.
