    On a dull day these guys can look quite dab but when the sun hits them they show off all that colour variation and iridescence. They are also great at aerating the golf course with that sharp beak.

    My first morning ever in South Africa, was to look out of hotel window in Cape Town, not only to see Table Mountain but to hear and see this local resident shouting their name from the roof-top. Just magic for this person from Norfolk.

    A difficult bird to connect with in The Gambia. The one reliable site near the coastal resorts is at Mandina Ba ricefields. The bird gets its name from its unusual raucous call: "ha-Da-ha".
