    Hamerkop dining.

The Hamerkop did manage to swallow this fish eventually, but it took a good 10 minutes. Photo is from a 5 week trip around Ethiopia in April 2019. Wonderful country for birds - managed to get shots of 165 different birds, and this was not, primarily, a birding tour. Lots of other great things to...

    Caught in mid air!

I spent the heat of the day at a small stream crossing, in the Kruger National Park. This Hamerkop and a Green-backed Heron were feasting on the abundance of fish. The light was not great, but the photographic opportunities were good and that was all that counted.

Hammer-shaped head is diagnostic (thus the name) but in this image is obscured as the neck is retracted ant the crest rests on its back.

I always think there is something pre-historic looking about this bird. It can't be mistaken for any other species.

The Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta), Stork, Umbrette, is a medium-sized wading bird (56 cm long, weighing 470 g). The shape of its head with a curved bill and crest at the back is reminiscent of a hammer, hence its name. The Hamerkop occurs in Africa south of the Sahara, Madagascar and coastal...
