  1. Watchful

    Watchful

This crow also had some choice words for me, but I don't speak crow so didn't blush or shudder in fear. Then again, perhaps he was just demanding that I distribute some bird seeds, and that I did do when I got to campus, but not right there where I saw this crow.
  2. Marooned?

    Marooned?

Out on an ice raft, at any rate. This was back when the river was nearly frozen over.
  3. Low Crow in the Snow

    Low Crow in the Snow

It was pretty cold that day on my monthly "Winter waterbird count" walk. We do count all the birds we see, although our annual report focuses on the waterfowl. I set out early that day so as to start my assigned stretch as soon as it was (barely) light enough. Days are so short at mid-winter...

    Hooded crow against the moon

I'm uncertain if photos without clear details are encouraged. Will take it down if it goes against the rules.

    Looking back

on a tough breeding season. This Hoodie seems to be heading into moult.
  8. SF - Pheeeyeuuwww!

    SF - Pheeeyeuuwww!

This one needs to go back in the bin. Not sure whether it was the crow that pulled this carton out of the bin behind the school or a pupil who was careless when tossing it. Either way, the crow sniffed a bit ... then rejected the carton.
  9. Hooded Crow

    Hooded Crow

Have a great weekend everyone...Stay safe.
  10. Bemused

    Bemused

I'm not sure about what, but he does seem to be smiling about something. Perhaps about that worm he hears below that doesn't yet know he's up there waiting.
  11. Watchful, unruffled

    Watchful, unruffled

Today's theme is watched birds watching the birdwatcher, but each in somewhat different moods. Three quick posts, then off to town to my dental hygienist appointment, some urban orienteering, and some dinner ingredient shopping. I'll catch up on browsing this evening ... is the plan.

  13. Pigeon-toed

    Pigeon-toed

I remember my grandmother standing in my parents' kitchen, pigeon-toed and looking down at her feet while she, then 93, told me that yes, she thought she would still be around for my next visit ... now that she had a new boyfriend. I don't think that's what this crow is trying to tell me, even...

    Doing the bird dance?

If I'd managed to come up with a better explanation for this pose and a better caption, this would have been my Saturday Fun shot this last weekend.
  16. You? Back again?

    You? Back again?

That day I had another meeting in the afternoon, so instead of joining the rest of the bird count gang for coffee at the botanical garden caf, I caught a bus back to town, picked up a coffee at my favourite caf near "Goose Park", stopped by the park again for a few shots in slightly better light...
  17. On the rocks 3

    On the rocks 3

A "dark horse" competitor for the Miss Bird title? I think the crow was a runaway winner for the intelligence part of the contest, and a worthy competitor on the beauty side too, just not quite up there among the finalists. But then, what do I know about beauty contests? My only...

    Reflecting what light there was

Not much light on a grey day in December, but this Hoodie managed to catch what light there was for a bit of iridescence in his black feathers. This made for my one share-worthy shot from that month's Winter Waterbird Count (we count all we see, although we take extra care for a detailed count...
  20. Lookin' back atcha.

    Lookin' back atcha.

There are hundreds of crows along the river at any given time, possibly thousands in the trees at night.
  21. If only ...

    If only ...

this crow had cawed for me, this shot would have been perfect. This was taken where the river path passes below the student social hall building. One of the many groups that uses the social hall is a comical men's choir called Pirum. They also organize a bathtub race (the water equivalent of a...
  22. After the night's rains

    After the night's rains

Another crow at the crosswalk to the "Solsiden" development. It had been a wet night and a foggy morning, but was just clearing up as I got that far along my route. From then on, the day was quite nice, as I recall. At least, that's what my later shots seem to show.
  23. First Friday

    First Friday

So now we're on to November. Nov 1 fell on a Friday. This winter, the mid-week birding group (most of us pensioners) has a project going. First Friday of every winter month we're doing a count of all the birds at the main water bird locales in the municipality. My route goes along the river...
