    Parts of the lake are completely frozen over. Winds keep the rest of the lake open but the rough waters drive ice up on the shore making hard for the swans to feed in shallow water.

    Every night in winter, red-crowned cranes fly to this river for the night. The river is fed by hot springs and never ices over and is relatively warm. Before dawn, photographers set up on the Otawa Bridge to capture the cranes waking up.
