  1. Blue Jay

    Blue Jay

From February 3rd when a pair of Blue Jays arrived on the Mockingbirds' tree, temporarily displacing the Mockingbirds, and let me get some shots from behind my car. This Jay was guarding while the other was feeding.

From February 3rd, my miraculous day with the Blue Jays! They arrived again while I was on the porch today, but saw me and took flight.

Feasting on the new suet cake

This is the new cake that I hung on the Mockers' tree this morning. After the Jays finished off the old cake on the same tree (see previous photo), they began to attack the new one. The Mockers stayed perched nearby and let the Jays eat!
  6. So tempting!

    So tempting!

The last piece of suet ready to fall out of the feeder was a great attraction for the birds this morning. The Red-Bellied Woodpecker tried to get it first, but got chased away by the Mockers. Then a pair of Blue Jays arrived. Apparently, the Jays are higher on the hierarchy because the...
  7. The last morsel

    The last morsel

A pair of Blue Jays has started coming to the feeders this winter. So different from last winter when I didn't have any! Sometimes the Mockers let them feed; sometimes they don't. Usually one of the Jays perches near the top of the tree to keep a lookout while the other one feeds. By...
  8. Black Headed Jay

    Black Headed Jay

my 1st post on this forum. Will love your Suggestion for improvement. The black-headed jay or lanceolated jay is roughly the same size as its close relative the Eurasian jay, but a little more slender overall except for the bill which is slightly shorter and thicker.

    Blue Jay

We had an inch of snow last night, which brought different birds to the feeders this morning. Again, this is not the Mockers' primary tree that they guard. It is the second tree, where I had placed a second feeder a couple of days ago. Nevertheless, early this morning, one of the Mockers was...

    Jay... again

I've become a bit preoccupied with the Jays and Sparrowhawks lately; I watch the behaviour of all the birds and squirrels, but I'm mostly taking pics of Jays and Fred. I'm trying to catch them in half-decent light in my trees, which is only possible at certain times of the day (glare/reflections...

    Size does matter...

apparently ;) I thought this might interest some of you: This is a heavy crop from just a 5mp image, as I forgot to set the camera back to 20mp. The original image was 2736*1824 - this crop was 1570*1177 (then resized down for upload)... so not many pixels on the subject. But... the pixels are...
