    Scaly Breast

The scaly patterns on the breast of this handsome Collared Kingfisher indicated that it is a juvenile.
  4. Baya Weaver (Juvenile)

    Baya Weaver (Juvenile)

Found this juvenile clinging on this stick as the mild breeze caused it to sway to and fro.
  5. Little Grebe Juvenile

    Little Grebe Juvenile

The Little Grebe is an uncommon resident of Singapore.
  6. Adult and Juvenile

    Adult and Juvenile

The Spotted Wood Owl is a rare resident of Singapore. This image shows an adult (top) with its juvenile (bottom). The adult seemed to be frowning as they stared curiously while the picture is taken.
  7. Proud to be a sparrow

    Proud to be a sparrow

Another fun thing about being back in California (not now, but two weeks ago) - all the different sparrows. Here we have only house, tree, and yellowhammer sparrows, but in California there are dozens of different ones. Saw three of the most common ones in the one hour at Schollenberger park -...
  8. Asian Glossy Starling (Juvenile)

    Asian Glossy Starling (Juvenile)

The Asian Glossy Starling is famed for its red eyes. This juvenile shows its partially red iris that must be developing gradually.

    Little Grebe (Adult with Juvenile)

The Little Grebe is an uncommon resident in Singapore. A juvenile here is following its proud parent.
  10. Juvenile Boobook

    Juvenile Boobook

This young fellow was hanging around our back garden all day in unseasonal rain last week. The parents were not in sight and we were quite concerned that the ravens might have him. However, the following morning there was no sign of him, or of his having been taken. Yesterday evening we probably...

Remember, sunflower hearts good, small stones not so much.
  12. Mystery sunbathing starlings.

    Mystery sunbathing starlings.

I've got several pics of adult and fledgeling starlings doing this on hot days. Ornithologists are divided on why. Some think its to cool down, letting air get to the skin, but why spread yourself in the full sun? Others suggest it's to get rid of parasites or even promote Vit D synthesis...
  13. Juvenile Great Crested Grebe

    Juvenile Great Crested Grebe

Seems as if this one is starting to lose it's stripey head so won't be long now before it gets it's adult winter plumage.
  14. View is fine from up here

View is fine from up here

Including my view of him - finally without twigs in between. But an instant later, he flew off. Thus ends the juvie robin close-up saga.
  15. From here I can reach those seedheads

From here I can reach those seedheads

And he did stretch over and nibble briefly, but that shot was a dud.
  16. Was that a drop of rain?

Was that a drop of rain?

I think it might well have been. Not that there was much rain that day, but there were a few drops. Then again, it could also have been dripping off the leaves above still from the two straight weeks of rain before that day. Here in Budapest, btw, there were also a few drops of rain today. But...

    Bibs are too for grown-ups!

Not that I was teasing him about the bib in the first place.
  18. Eyes right!

    Eyes right!

Next to last day with the juvie robin. Today he finally turns the other way around, but on the same branch. Tomorrow he moves to another branch before taking off entirely.
  19. Juvenile Hobby

    Juvenile Hobby

Apologies for the lack of definition but this was taken at some distance, certainly well over 100 yards away. This is a first for me, which is why I wish to add it to my gallery. We watched it hunt for quite some time over the reed beds and this was the nearest it perched. After today I shall...
  20. I'm goin' thattaway

    I'm goin' thattaway

We're nearing the end of the series. He turned, he moved over a branch or two, then he took off. At least before the first move he pointed which way he planned on going ;)

    Did I hear applause?

No, that was just the camera "clapping"

    My hairdresser calls them "highlights"

Speckles, after all, are for kids, and I'm almost grown up!
  23. Peeep!

    Peeep!

More of the juvie robin "story". He seemed to have a lot to tell, expressive as his poses were. But even long stories must end. Another 2 days' worth, a couple more non-robin shots from that day, maybe a few shots from my garden, then we'll see what I find in and near Budapest this...
  24. And they say it'll get even colder!

And they say it'll get even colder!

:eek!: It's actually quite "mild" (for this far north, this late in the year). But yes, this little fellow needs to fatten up and learn how to stay warm. It stays a few degrees milder out on the Lade peninsula, where he lives, but even there it will drop to -20C for a few days mid-winter.
  25. Thoughtful

    Thoughtful

At least, that's how he looks to me.
