The Spotted Wood Owl is a rare resident of Singapore.
This image shows an adult (top) with its juvenile (bottom). The adult seemed to be frowning as they stared curiously while the picture is taken.
Another fun thing about being back in California (not now, but two weeks ago) - all the different sparrows. Here we have only house, tree, and yellowhammer sparrows, but in California there are dozens of different ones. Saw three of the most common ones in the one hour at Schollenberger park -...
This young fellow was hanging around our back garden all day in unseasonal rain last week. The parents were not in sight and we were quite concerned that the ravens might have him.
However, the following morning there was no sign of him, or of his having been taken. Yesterday evening we probably...
I've got several pics of adult and fledgeling starlings doing this on hot days. Ornithologists are divided on why. Some think its to cool down, letting air get to the skin, but why spread yourself in the full sun? Others suggest it's to get rid of parasites or even promote Vit D synthesis...
I think it might well have been. Not that there was much rain that day, but there were a few drops. Then again, it could also have been dripping off the leaves above still from the two straight weeks of rain before that day.
Here in Budapest, btw, there were also a few drops of rain today. But...
Next to last day with the juvie robin. Today he finally turns the other way around, but on the same branch. Tomorrow he moves to another branch before taking off entirely.
Apologies for the lack of definition but this was taken at some distance, certainly well over 100 yards away. This is a first for me, which is why I wish to add it to my gallery. We watched it hunt for quite some time over the reed beds and this was the nearest it perched.
After today I shall...
We're nearing the end of the series. He turned, he moved over a branch or two, then he took off. At least before the first move he pointed which way he planned on going ;)
More of the juvie robin "story". He seemed to have a lot to tell, expressive as his poses were. But even long stories must end. Another 2 days' worth, a couple more non-robin shots from that day, maybe a few shots from my garden, then we'll see what I find in and near Budapest this...
:eek!: It's actually quite "mild" (for this far north, this late in the year). But yes, this little fellow needs to fatten up and learn how to stay warm. It stays a few degrees milder out on the Lade peninsula, where he lives, but even there it will drop to -20C for a few days mid-winter.
