I could get quite close to this kestrel. He was watching for something for tea from a roof and didn't notice me (or didn't want to notice). I just pressed the button at the moment he had seen the desired.
Here's the male hiding in a tree and watching potential prey; these aren't easy to see when they're in trees like this, even without any leaves.
(I couldn't manage the reservoirs this morning, but I might go next week)
This is a shot taken just before he joined the female in the trees (I didn't spook him, he's used to seeing people; no... you can't stroke him ;) ). There's four of these circular recesses in the side of a building, but this is the one used most often.
Here's a shot of the male from yesterday morning at the reservoirs. I couldn't get quite as close to him as I did the female, not surprising really, as the girls have always liked me (or maybe my memory isn't what it used to be) ;)
I mentioned on Tuesday, that one of the male Kestrels was mugged by a Magpie, but I didn't see the prey clearly before the Magpie took it. However, I checked through my pics again, and I think it was a Mouse.
A very heavy crop, so very noisy and a bit pixelated, but I think you can see the prey...
One of the males from the Reservoirs this morning. Female is in the nest, and the adult male and 2nd winter male are bringing food to the nest. Well one is, one got mugged by a Magpie|=)| Great to watch him chase the Magpie, but Magpies are a bit too smart to be outfoxed by a Kestrel.
Back a...
I managed an hour at the Reservoirs yesterday morning, but I think I should have rested a few more days before going again. Still, it's too late now|=)|
Firstly, the two Egyptian Goslings are still alive and well. I know it's the same two as their parents are ringed. The Kestrels seem to have...
Managed nearly two hours at the Reservoirs this morning, and it was Sunny for a change. Best part was watching five Kestrels trying to display while being attacked by Crows. There was one female Kestrel on the nest, and four males fighting. Great to see, but I'm not sure what was actually...
Another pic of the Kestrel that visited the garden in May. I only saw him catch one Mouse, and he never came back. There's still Mice in the garden, but the Cats, and a male Sparrowhawk, keep the numbers down.
Through the window as usual.
I uploaded a pic of this Kestrel weeks ago, but I forgot to upload this one. The tail is spread more on this shot, so I thought it different enough to the other pic.
This was taken on a very Windy day, and the Kestrel isn't actually hovering, but fighting against the Wind and attempting to...
I've been a bit preoccupied with pics of birds from the Reservoir lately, which means I've got behind with pics from the garden. So here's another of the male Kestrel that visited last month.
He only showed up three times in two days; I'm hoping uploading his pic will encourage his return, well...
Another pose from the new garden visitor. I've only seen him twice, but there's enough Mice left for him to show up again.
And the Sparrowhawks have noticed the 20+ (so far) Starling juveniles, a large female was just on the fence. I'm not sure if this will put the Kestrel off visiting...
Another pic of the Kestrel that visited for two days. There's still Mice about, and loads of fledgling Sparrows and Starlings, so I'm hopeful that he'll return.
Through the window as usual.
I hope I've not done anything against the rules, but I've deleted my Crow image to upload this. I'll upload the Crow again another day.
I started a thread yesterday as I was so surprised to see this male Kestrel in the garden. I hoped that he might come back, and he just did.|=)| He's after the...
There's always a temptation to crop as close as you can to show detail on the bird, especially when it's a plain BG. Which is exactly what I did Saturday for this bird. Looking at the original picture again, I think this is how I should have cropped it.
I don't usually upload different crops...
No update on the history of the young male, but I'm now certain that the chicks have hatched. Two reasons for this; firstly I heard them; and secondly, the tree was full of Corvids. There was a few Crows, Magpies, and Jays; all of them harassing the Kestrels. I've a feeling they were after the...
Another pic of the male that was high up a tree. The tree is regularly used for nesting at this time of year, and also as a favoured perch for the rest of the year. As I said before; the female was preparing the nest, the male just keeping lookout.
It was interesting, as there was a BBC...
Just got back from the Reservoirs, but thought I'd upload this before I sort out the rest of my pictures.
There was three of these, and they was constantly being harassed by Crows and Magpies. They hardly had time to land before they was scared off. In the end the Pylons were occupied by...
Long time since i posted mostly down to bad weather or just getting the same old same old ....today I decided to check the other road users brakes and reactions ...again :) .... on the Motorway when I spotted this young Male Kestrel on a lamp post I am never never lucky with this bird and today...
