  1. Following Forager

    Following Forager

Hot on the heels of the robin was a Yellowhammer! Gorgeous birds and fairly scarce round here now sadly.
  2. Ground feeding

    Ground feeding

There are a number of feeders at the feeding station in the woodland at Kinnordy. As well as topping up some of the feeders when we go, we usually scatter some seeds on the ground round about. A Robin approached through some stinging nettles and appeared to be quite unscathed!
  3. Battle for top dog

    Battle for top dog

Now it's a Great Tit wanting to beat up a male Chaffinch, for feeding rights over the peanuts (or the seed which I put on the shelf!
  4. Red comes in

    Red comes in

Red Kites are really spreading throughout this area now and, although not daily sightings, we do come across them pretty often, even had two on my patch the other day! They are still the highlight of the day when we do see any! This one gave me another chance to practise a flight shot.
  5. Young about

    Young about

Of course Kinnordy (and the birds) didn't let us down by providing some youngsters. A Mute Swan swam past the hide leading her group of little cygnets - they look very young, so I don't think they're long hatched.
  6. Practising

    Practising

I still practise flight shots when I get a chance. Some of them work and, although this Grey Heron was a little distant (way over the other side of the loch), it didn't work out too badly I think.
  7. If I time it right....

    If I time it right....

.... she may not notice!!? A cheeky Blue Tit, photo-bombed my attempts to get a picture of a Chaffinch, on a feeder at Kinnordy reserve! Saturday Fun,
  8. Like ships passing in the night

Like ships passing in the night

One of many pictures I've taken when a species shows itself in the image that I didn't know was there!! I was taking the Mute Swan in flight but on preparing the image for posting here I spotted the Grey Heron in the background - at least I presume it's a heron, I can't see much detail...
  9. Sepia

    Sepia

There were a few Mute Swan about that afternoon; didn't see any pairs though, so presumably the females were on nests. I rather like the colours in this image.
  10. The Chase is On

    The Chase is On

Looks like the male Tufted Ducks are all chasing after the same female!! Taken on a recent visit to Kinnordy at the end of April. Saturday Fun
  11. A Happy Couple

    A Happy Couple

Towards the end of April, saw us back at Kinnordy. Rather dull light that day, but I thought it made a rather nice image with these Mallards.
  12. Rather monotone

    Rather monotone

The colour of the water didn't really strike me at the time, I just thought it was nice looking at the two Mallard swimming across the loch. End of November did seem rather early to be pairing up though LOL
  13. Not impressed

    Not impressed

A Mute Swan was play-acting beside a couple of mates... but they don't seem to be enjoying the fun as much as he was. A rather distant view at Kinnordy in September. Saturday Fun
  14. Off to canoodle in privacy?

    Off to canoodle in privacy?

We made a latish February visit to Kinnordy and love appears to be in the air as I'm sure this pair of Greylag have something in mind the way they're sneaking off LOL Saturday Fun
  15. What a load of bills!!

    What a load of bills!!

I had my first visit for a while to Kinnordy last month. There were quite a lot of Greylag Geese flying around and on the loch too. It wasn't until I downloaded the pictures from the day that I saw how many bills were showing... how many can you see LOL Saturday Fun
  16. Working towards the next generation

    Working towards the next generation

I managed to get to Kinnordy at last and got into the hide. The last time I attempted this the car park was full of construction vehicles as they're 'improving' the path to Kirriemuir. Seems they have now moved on to the second phase, further along. Anyway.... I got into the Gullery hide to see...

I left the feeders and drove to the western end of the reserve to look back across the marsh. Keen to see what was about and moving there. Not too much, a distant crow sitting on a post in the bog; there were also some Greylag and Lapwings flying around but didn't get pictures of them (at least...
  18. Resting up

    Resting up

Middle of March.... guess it wouldn't be long before they set off back north for the breeding season. Not the clearest of images, but taking through the trees, the focusing was bothered by the intervening branches, twigs and reeds. And they were rather distant too, right over on the other side...
  19. Does two make a charm?

    Does two make a charm?

I looked away for a few minutes only to find that another Goldfinch had arrived. Comparing them, I think the new-comer is a female (less red round the face)?
  20. A view through the trees

    A view through the trees

Hides were still closed on the reserve in March (I believe they're open now), so to find a small gap in the trees lining the loch was the only hope of seeing what may be out on the water. There were a few Oystercatchers on one of the bog bean islands. I'm not sure if they were passing through...
  21. My local rarity

    My local rarity

The last Goldfinch I saw was when I was with Peter and Adrienne in South Australia would you believe! That was in October 2019!! Ok we've been locked down more-or-less since I got home from there so not a lot of birding done. However, I very, very, rarely see them in the garden. And I believe...
  22. Blending in

    Blending in

I found the female Chaffinch not far from where the earlier male had been. Her colouring is so similar to the habitat, isn't it.
  23. Bottoms up (SF)

    Bottoms up (SF)

Hummmph.... seems the Great Tits at Kinnordy aren't so polite as ones I see elsewhere!!! That's what he thought of my offerings obviously!
  24. Not the best....

    Not the best....

.... Chaffie picture I've taken, but I did rather like the setting with this old, fallen, moss covered trees and branches in the leaf litter.
  25. Savouring

    Savouring

Or was he wondering what it was. I guess he liked the seed I'd provided though.
