Just finished this Gouache portrait of a Lanner falcon, as a demonstration for a friend. This has been a solely brush painting without initial pencil drawing and is based on video footage I took in a Wildpark last year.

My first ever life study of a Lanner falcon(falconry bird). I`m not sure about the subspecies since falconers use to crossbreed their birds.

Spotted overflying the house, haven't seen him again so was lucky to get this shot.

After three weeks of "hard" brushwork, I managed to finish this commissioned composition, which is based on preliminary sketches, and a lot of research.

We watched this bird charging through huge flocks of Quelea. So many birds, it seemed impossible that it could miss but it failed every time.

Lanners are stunning birds to watch. This individual caught us unawares on a "bush stop". By the time I got back to the jeep & got the camera it was more distant & distorted by heat-haze. The bird gained height on a thermal then suddenly broke off to chase a "collared dove" disappearing rapidly...
