One thing (well one among very many) I didn't know before I went to Western Australia, was that Laughing Kookaburras weren't native to the state, they were introduced.
I just thought they were all over (hands up who else thought that!)
So here was one resting in the bushes round Lake...
We had a bit more time the next day for wandering around John & Dora's property.
I'm not so sure this Kookaburra had landed in the same tree as yesterday's cuckoo? As I remember leaning against the wall of the house to steady myself for this full zoom up high shot.
A bird I'd wanted to...
When we got back to the camp there was still a little light left and I spotted this kookaburra sitting on the roof of one of the cabins.
He'd obviously been waiting to welcome us home, hadn't he LOL
On another of the power lines I spotted this pretty Laughing Kookaburra.
He looked a bit too serious to be laughing though, don't you think.
I suppose he could be wondering where to find a girlfriend for the coming season!
.... well they do have a very serious looking bill, don't they!
Another bird that greeted our arrived was this Laughing Kookaburra, he was sitting on the railing round the verandah of the kitchen block where we were having a cuppa and a lovely piece of Judy's cake.
.... though maybe he's just building himself up for a good old giggle.
Back in the garden, a Laughing Kookaburra had settled himself on the washing line overlooking the feeding and water bowls.
Turned out this was one of his favourite perches.
On the way home Ken noticed some work had been going on at another small reserve so we went in to investigate.
Getting rather hot now, so not much around; however we did find a pair of Laughing Kookaburras sitting in a tree.
A Laughing Kookaburra settled on a branch above our heads and starting calling... then another arrived and the pair sat there for a minute or two singing in chorus.
It was wonderful to watch and listen to and Ken and I were both entranced. They put on quite a show for me.
so here's your belated SF shot from me this week - a Laughing Kookaburra having a laugh. I got three shots of Kookaburras "laughing", and in each one, they "blinked", i.e. closed their nictating membranes. Maybe they always do that ...?
After 3 days and 2 nights of flying, I woke up ... somewhere ... in a strange hotel room, picked up a map in reception and set out walking to find a park. Apparently I'm in Australia, because I'm pretty sure those are Kookaburras. And yes, they "laugh" ... Mwaaahahahahaha! Sounded like...
Kelly got quite a good series of the Kookaburra that she had spotted when putting the washing out on the line. Grabbed Pete's camera and dashed out to see what she could get! This is one of the photos that we sent to the local council and landcare groups.... do hope you all enjoy, as much as the...
I like the back view of this bird, as it has such a beautiful stripped tail feathers
I also love the fact these guys have black stripe across their eyes (ninja-like) and gather the whole family to laugh at us at the dusk :)
I've been going regularly to Cleland CP for a couple of years trying to photograph a Chestnut-rumped Heathwren, still with no luck, but today I did manage the Kookaburra.
