In August of this year I spent about a week birding in southern California. One very hot midday, just outside the visitor center of the Sunny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge, I noticed this Lesser Nighthawk silently flying about, as if it had been disturbed and was seeking a suitable...

On June 5 I was 50 miles offshore of Vancouver Island photographing albatrosses and other pelagic birds. I was surprised to see a nighthawk flying towards me. It turned out to be Lesser Nighthawk which was the first ever sighting for B.C. and 2nd ever for Canada.

This is a first for me! Was down by the Salton Sea and happened upon this bird.

This isn't a really great picture, but it shows the placement of the white patch on the wings.
