  1. Lincoln's Sparrow

    Lincoln's Sparrow

A fairly common winter visitor and migrant in Texas. They prefer wet weedy fields but are shy and rather elusive. The buffy coloration across the chest is a helpful field mark. The similar Song Sparrow is better known and more widespread, but does not normally occur in southern Texas.

    Lincoln's sparrow

I quite like the look of this sparrow with the coffee-colored wash on its chest and face. Second only to the lark sparrow in terms of beauty, in my opinion.

Another birder at Bodega Head that day tipped me off that he'd just seen his first Lincoln's Sparrow of the season - somewhere amidst the White-crowneds in this shrub. So I looked them over carefully for one that looked different, and suddenly there he was :D
