These birds are very shy and secretive. We hear them calling during the breeding season but they are silent for the rest of the year. They must regularly breed at our lake but this is the first evidence I have recorded.
While pretending to be a bird myself (climbing on a tree for a better view and some disguise) this fellow just passed a few meters below me, and luckily, without noticing the strange extension on the branch above.
Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea) Sexes similar. I am going to the coast for 4-5 days even though the weather is not promising. I will not post during this time but hopefully I will be able to do some viewing.
