  1. Little bigfoot

    Little bigfoot

This one must be quite young to be so outsized by his feet.
  2. Adventure duckling

    Adventure duckling

It was fun watching the many ducklings when I was in Gothenburg a few weeks back. This was one of a clutch of two. They clearly had different personalities. This little gal or fella was the adventurous one, out exploring ...

  4. Mallard duckling

    Mallard duckling

The botanical gardens were full of juvies. Only mallards, sparrows and gulls at the duck pond this year. In previous years there have also been other species (goldeneye, wigeon, wagtail, wren), but last winter the gardeners had renovated the pond and that had entailed clearing some of the dense...

I think this is a baby Mallard duckling (forgive the redundancy - it's just the cutest way to say it.) :) No post production editing was done other than adding the watermark and my name. Any comments, questions, or constructive criticisms are welcome.

Ummm, no thanks. Looked both cold and dirty to me. But the duckling's parents took the invitation and jumped in.
  11. The last duckling

    The last duckling

I never did like the children's book about Ping the duckling. It seemed designed to send a moral message, but I couldn't find a message I was prepared to accept. This little duckling was last, but doing fine. Sure, s/he took more risks, and maybe would get caught out of Mum's protective reach...
  12. Duckling among the water lilies

    Duckling among the water lilies

The shot just before the one where it turned its head towards one of the flowers.
  13. Dawn duckling praising the sun

    Dawn duckling praising the sun

Back home from Sweden. On our final mile we spotted four cranes out in a field. Husband drove out onto a tractor track and pulled up behind some hay bale stacks so I could get a closer shot. Still quite a distance, but a nice ending to the holiday. Not so nice ending was discovering that in our...
  14. Explorer duckling

    Explorer duckling

There were also three clutches of ducklings plus mums and other adults at the duckpond. Even among the youngest ducklings, you could already see different personalities. This little mallard was the most daring of his siblings (they were 5 in all) - the last to join the flock when mum called for...

This Lady Puts Octomom To Shame!

She's got 10 in her brood. Earlier this year, heavy rains wiped out the mallard nesting area. We feared no baby ducks. Today I saw this. They're brand new, they weren't there yesterday.

    Not an ugly Duckling

First that I've seen this year, unfortunately just one with the mother. There may have been others nearby, but the Pike in the stream take a few, as do the Grey Herons.
  24. Remember the Sunshine?

    Remember the Sunshine?

This sunny shot was taken last Saturday but it seems weeks ago that we last saw sunshine. This Mallard duckling was pottering about amidst the weed at Strumpshaw Fen. I must get some more shots of adult birds before my Gallery descends into total cutesville! Ron
