    look closely and you can see a parasitic red mite on the butterfly's back. Many of this butterfly species that we saw had an unwanted passenger, although it seems they do no great harm to the host.

    I was walking on the edge of a marsh round midday at the height of a heat wave. I met no one but I saw dozens of these butterflies flitting about the hedges. I don't know why but the way this one is poised on top of a flower makes me think of a ballerina.

    Thank you for your comments on yesterday's post of two Marbled White butterflies. I was struck by the golden costa of the female, a feature which is unusual but sometimes happens.Here's another shot showing the lovely very buff colour of the wing undersides in the female.

    ...sitting on a thistle! I wish I'd got a bit more DOF in this shot to get the wing tips sharply in focus. Still, given that the butterflies were not settling for long I was pleased to get this shot.
