Another shot from my once in a lifetime photo opportunity of this lovely bird.

Merlin (Falco columbarius) A female migrant.

Sometimes you just get lucky! She settled about 25 mtrs fom me to devour a small bird she had taken. I assumed it was a Kestrel at first, but the white barring on the tail and the white collar and nape -I think - confirms a female merlin.

Took this one last year. Luckily I had the camera next to me in the car.

Not sure but this could be a last years young.

Merlin (Falco columbarius subsp. columbarius) Male, species sexually dimorphic. Its prey appears to be a Red-eyed Vireo. Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, Chambers County, Texas, USA. Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes Vegetational Area. Open coastal prairie at ca. 1 m (3.3 ft) elevation.

Only the second time that I've seen one of these from my back deck. They sure don't give you much time to snap the picture as they fly past. The gray sky didn't help much either.
