This was taken in a patch of land where the ranch owners had uprooted a number of small trees. Quite a few birds were searching for tidbits in the soft dirt. This Northern mockingbird had some luck.

Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos subsp. polyglottos) 1st year bird. Still trying to perfect its hunting techniques. Brazos Center, Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, USA. Open ground just above Carter Creek riparian (flood plain) dominated by hackberry/elm/yaupon at ca. 88 m (290 ft) elevation.

Mockingbirds, when they hunt, flush insects by flashing the large white spots on their wings. I watched this guy hunt for several minutes, very interesting.

This Northern Mockingbird was keeping a sharp eye out for intruders when I snapped his picture.

I wouldn't call them brave so much as astute. I rolled of 20 frames of this setting but only caught one where they were facing each other.

A common song bird of arid country

One morning this week we were photographing birds in Anastasia State Park when Lydia spotted an adult Mockingbird feeding its fledgling. I was able to capture this picture of the feeding.
